
Why Transformations Fail
Read any article on transformation and it will inevitably include a gloomy statistic on the percentage that fail. The tragedy is that there is usually no good reason for a transformation not to succeed. Companies trip over the same avoidable mistakes time and time again. Having spent several decades either running transformations myself or coaching others I can see that there are 2 reasons the rate of failure is so high.
- The intent of transformations tend to be short term, purely financial and seen as additional work. Transformations that target attainment of long term purpose and create the climate to release the passion of people inevitably deliver significantly better outcomes over the long term
- The leaders of the transformation are not given any training or coaching. Leading a transformation is pretty much the hardest leadership job there is, yet leaders are typically thrown in the deep end and told to get on with it.
The design and execution of a transformation is a skill that can be learnt and is enhanced through experience.
